WOULDN'T IT BE WONDERFUL IF MARTINA HINGIS WINS THE AUSTRALIAN OPEN?
Martina Hingis
Country:Switzerland
Birth date: 30.9.1980
Birthplace: Kosice, Slovakia
Career Singles Titles: 40
Career Doubles Titles: 36
Career Prize Money: $18,358,600 USD
In 1997 Martina won all the Grand Slam Singles titles except the one at Roland Garros. In 1997, 1998 and 1999, Martina was not only the Singles Champion in the Australian Open, but she also won the Doubles titles as well. She was the Singles champion at Wimbledon in 1997 and the Doubles champion in 1996 and 1998. In 1998 she was the Doubles champion in the US Open and in her last appearance there in 2002 she reached the Semi Finals in the Doubles. Although she never won the Singles title in Roland Garros, she was the Doubles champion there twice, in 1998 and 2000.
In the current Australian Open, Martina beat Vera Zvonareva in the first round, 6-1, 6-2. In the second round she beat Emma Laine, 6-1, 6-1. In both these games Martina played like the champion she was, as though she had never taken a three year hiatus from high-level competitive tennis. It will be a fairy tale ending if she wins the 2006 Australian Open.
