In today's Star under "Sabah wants its rare orchids back", the head of research and development of a pharmaceutical company was sentenced to four months jail by a British court for importing 130 rare orchids into Britain. Among them were six of Sabah's rarest orchid species, the Paphiopedilum Rothschildianum, found only in a remote part of Mount Kinabalu. The Malaysian scientist, an "ardent orchid collecter, denied that he had imported the orchids into Britain for commericial gain. Nevertheless, I feel that the Malaysian government should have him extradited and tried under "hudud law" and have his hands chopped off. Four months in a British jail is too light for him for stealing our national treasure.
